Today’s digital currency is consumer attention & time spent on screen, and as such it should come as no surprise when Facebook add 4 steps to Snapchat Links.

We all know that every social media platform is fighting for the consumer’s attention & with the release of the Snapchat username sharing option that was deep-linked into the rival app, we are surprised it took as long as it did for Facebook to weaken the ease of sharing on their platform. These extra steps could be the differentiating value between losing people or not from the Platform at the time of the sharing / discovery on Facebook. A very clever move by them…

How did Facebook add 4 steps to Snapchat Links?

The old process looked like this on an iPhone:

  1. [SNAPCHAT] Add Friends
  2. [SNAPCHAT] Share Username
  3. [SNAPCHAT] Copy
  4. [FACEBOOK] Paste URL
  5. [FACEBOOK] User clicks URL*
    1. MOBILE ->
      1. [SNAPCHAT] Deep link opens Snapchat app to your profile
      2. [SNAPCHAT] Adds friend

*DESKTOP -> Link navigates to the Snapcode & user scans Code to add you

  3. [SNAPCHAT] Copy
  4. [FACEBOOK] Paste URL
  5. [FACEBOOK] User clicks URL :
    1. MOBILE ->
      1. [FACEBOOK] Link navigates to the Snapcode in a Facebook’s own Browser – Desktop look!
      2. [FACEBOOK – BROWSER] Screenshot Snapcode
      3. [SNAPCHAT] Open App
      4. [SNAPCHAT] Add Friends
      5. [SNAPCHAT] Scan By Snapcode
      6. [SNAPCHAT] Add friend

*DESKTOP -> Link navigates to the Snapcode & user scans Code to add you

NOTE:
Yes you can use the option to ‘open another app’ but this will merely open Snapchat and not deep-link to the person’s profile. Thus breaking the automation & ease to connect & meaning it actually adds even more steps to get back to the Snapcode to scan.

But what does this mean for you?

Just being aware that there are extra steps to links shared on Facebook specifically & as such the Snapcodes are going to be the best way now to share – but remember to add your username below in the comments (so that people who can’t scan because of the glare / reflections on screen).
