Millennials (a.k.a. Gen Y) are those of us born sometime between the early 1980’s and early 2000’s. We mark the end of not only a century, but also the end of an era of traditional marketing and advertising practices. Millennials and video go hand in hand (thanks to mobiles, quite literally).

Millennials and video

The first truly digital generation makes up around 21% of consumer spending. This sought after market can be tricky to reach and engage: half of them would rather watch online videos that TV and they have a strong inclination towards viewing content on mobile.

And they’re not just watching cat videos or binging on the latest season of Game of Thrones.

The majority of Millennials will watch video content when researching a product or service and 7 out of 10 will watch a company video when shopping online.

Over half would also rather watch a company video than read a newsletter.

Check out this infographic from Animoto on Millennials and video.

With all this in mind, how do you reach the most sought after market?

Product demo videos

Millennials love product demo videos! In fact, 85% of them find them useful. Make sure they’re not too dry or too in-depth – remember, us Millennials have very short attention spans, so make sure you capture our attention from the moment we hit ‘play’!

For more on demo videos, read How to use how-to videos.

Testimonial videos

Testimonial videos are a great way to showcase your capabilities and highlight your product or service benefits. To top it off, 69% of Millennials say they find them helpful in making purchasing decisions.

Feature your testimonial videos on your homepage or relevant services pages. Share them via social media and feature them on your YouTube channel.

Video in your email

Simply including the word ‘video’ in the subject line will result in a 65% increase in click through rates, according to HubSpot. That’s based on the general public. More specifically, half of Millennials will actually read a company email if it features a video.

Include your latest testimonial video or a new product demo in your emails. Create a regular ‘tips and tricks’ video which can form a part of your weekly newsletter. Answer FAQs through video and include this in your next EDM.

The options are endless, so no excuses!

Mobile friendly

Make sure your videos are mobile friendly. Things to consider when creating videos for mobile viewing are:

  • Run length: keep it short for maximum engagement
  • File size: as small as possible for fast load time
  • Resolution: don’t go nuts keep it to 1080p
  • Video hosting: upload to sites like YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook for quick streaming
