In the fast paced digital world that we live in we’re constantly connected to devices. We sit in front of them. We carry them. We wear them. So it’s unsurprising that the latest figures indicate the average person checks their mobile 150x a day!
But that statistic really caught my attention and got me thinking. How much time is wasted each day by the distractions of phone notifications?
Now I’m pretty strict on my technology exposure already and have spent months crafting the following into my lifestyle:
- No emails are sent outside of 8am & 6pm,
- Between 8pm & 8am mobile phone switches to ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, and
- One technology free day a week!
But two weeks ago I went one step further and made the decision to turn off ALL notifications on my phone, with the exception of phone calls and text messages, to see if it had an impact on my productivity.
My experiment was met with mixed reactions across the Deli team and my wider networks:
- Let me know how it goes,
- I wish I had the courage to do that, OR
- Aren’t you afraid you’ll miss something important?
It never fails to surprise me how many people feel that they need to be contactable 24/7.
Just because technology is always switched on doesn’t mean you have to be!
As much as I live & breath technology for work, I do in fact LOVE going tech free and found the whole process of no notifications rather liberating.
Admittedly the first 24 hours were difficult because, well, I had to break a habit. But after 48 hours I was no longer hooked on my phone.
I found myself being extremely task focused, laser driven & far more communicative in my daily activities. I was more active on social media (yes that’s possible!) – finding I engaged more with online conversations and had more time to read articles/posts.
The impact on my life and therefore the Deli was phenomenal.
Giving myself permission not to be at the beck and call of notifications, technology & social media significantly increased my capacity, my motivation & my focus beyond measure.
NEWS FLASH – the world will not end, and your business will not fail, simply because you chose to take time away from technology!
So I challenge you to give it a go. To turn off your notifications and even go tech free for a day – I promise you it’ll be a game changer.
