Back in January our amazing in-house Director David asked me if I’d take on the challenge of producing a feature film. But not just any feature film, it was one that he’s written! Swamped with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude, my immediate answer was a resounding YES!

Of course, with no experience of the Australian Film industry, the entrepreneur in me decided it was best not to waste time with researching a seemly dysfunctional industry but rather to produce this film the ‘Becca Way’. So in true Deli style we’re taking an out-of-the-box approach to funding the film and doing it our way.

Those who know the Deli & I well, know that our values stem from respect of creatives and with that comes non-negotiable rates when paying our team & contractors what they’re worth. So you can imagine my surprise when I discovered that the majority of film productions (excluding BIG budget productions and those that are fully funded through private investors or industry grants) are often done on little more the goodwill of the cast & crew who make $50 a day on set!

In an instant, my gut told me that we needed to fully fund the film.  And in that instant I committed to raising the funds.

Now creativity for these things can’t be planned, so fast-forward eight months (yes eight!) because this is when it happened.

One brisk August evening, after a conversation about video content to a group of small business owners, I decided that the best way to fund the film would be to do what we do best at the Deli – make kick-arse videos for businesses!

Now the Deli Agency don’t normally do ‘packaged’ videos, but market demand for such an offering had grown significantly and we’d recently put some together!

It was a no brainer. We would fund the film through the sale of our packaged promotional videos (DeliStart) and event highlights videos – with 100% of the profits of the sales going to the film rather than our shareholders (me!).

Having a video on a landing page or homepage increases conversion by up to 80%

I worked out that I’d need to sell 250 videos at the price of $2500 to cover all production costs of both the videos & the film.

For some this may seem like a large number, but the reality is that every business out there can benefit from using video content and my networks span thousands of businesses across Sydney and beyond!

We just needed a reason for business owners to part with the cash upfront for their video, and we came up with the following:

For each promotional or event highlights video sold throughout the month of September the business would receive heaps of added benefits:

  •      The company name and/or logo in the credits of the film
  •      2x tickets to the official red carpet screening & after party.
  •      Social promotion of their video across Deli social channels

And so it began. We launched our marketing campaign at the beginning of September, with the aim of selling all 250 videos in just a single month!

(I’ve even gone as far as putting 250 post-it notes on our office wall so that we can visually mark and track where we are with our target!)

We’re currently on day 12, and it’s not going to be an easy task to complete. But I’m confident that with the support of the Deli team, my networks and the extensive business community we will smash it.

So, if you are a business owner, you work in a business or you know someone who does please support and share our quest.
